Elusive Poppy (Ire)
2015 bay mare by Black Sam Bellamy (Ire) ex Pelican Point (GB) (Namaqualand (USA))
Bred by James and Amelia Gray who own and run the hugely successful Elusive Bloodstock Operation from their farm in Lincolnshire, Elusive Poppy is a 4yo bay Filly with a gorgeous temperament, She has size, scope and a presence about her which belies her age.
Now In full Training with Rebecca Menzies at Howe Hills Stables, she is pleasing Rebecca and at the time of writing(12/09/19) she is being built up slowly to race fit Standards and is doing one and a half canters a day.
A big strong filly, there is no doubt that chasing will be her game in time but it should be noted that her dam, Pelican Point, was a similar build and size, with immense potential and 4-6yo and achieved a more than notable rating of 125 following a third place at Ascot in a C3 Novice Hurdle over 16f on heavy ground. The ground conditions there are particularly relevant as the dam has passed her preference for soft ground on to her daughter as she has a pronounced high knee action and so will almost certainly need soft winter ground and whilst her dam had the speed for a two mile campaign and achieved such a good rating before injury curtailed her career, the is no doubt that Elusive Poppy will want further as she progresses which will open up all sort of possibilities and opportunities to her.
She is one the most the impressive fillies Paul and I have seen for a long while and we loved her from the moment we saw her in the field and everything we have seen since, on and off the gallops leads us to believe that we have a filly that can do very well for anyone connected to her.
The pedigree attached in the PDF reads to us like a pedigree of potential yet to be reached and we feel and hope that this is the filly that is going to fulfill that potential. It screams, soft ground, 2m4f+ chasers particularly through the 3rd dam via Crash Course who himself bred some very smart National Hunt horses who all needed soft ground and 2m4f+ but his progeny was not short of speed at two-miles.
Elusive Poppy’s sire, Black Sam Bellamy needs little introduction being a prolific sire of winner such as The Giant Bolster, Sam Spinner and latterly Kateson trained by Tom Lacey, who ran Champ and Getaway Trump close in the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle last season.
